Adventures in Cloth Diapering

I used only disposable diapers with the 3 older kids. This time, I thought I'd branch out and try the cloth diapers. I was rather surprised to find out that the higher end diapers are about $20 each! Luckily, I found some basic prefolds and covers through Baby Best Buy for much cheaper than that. I also made some using a free pattern on the internet, and used receiving blankets.

Cuteness! These are sweet and absorbent. They're harder to wash though, and dry slower since they are so thick.

My personal favourites: boring white prefolds with velcro cover. They may not look like much, but they're versatile, easy to wash, and easy to use.

I only have a half dozen covers, so my stash only lasts about a day before I have to launder them. Once I get my second order of covers, I'm hoping to only do an extra load twice a week or so.

I'm enjoying it though, and it is helping with the cost of diapers. Gen tends to get a little irritated in the bum area with the disposables, too, so double bonus for cloth!

Em..why are u going thru so many covers? From what I understood, you can use the same cover a few times before you need to wash them. I was told that you can just change the doubler and prefold, and that the liner usually stays relatively dry...is this not the case?

If I use her woolies, it can be reused. Her other covers always get poop around the leg. I think it's because the diapers and the covers are slightly too big for her. I got mediums instead of smalls because with the way my babies grow, I didn't want to spend money on something that would only fit for a couple weeks! The coloured diapers are absorbent enough that I can reuse the covers with them, though.

I c...so hopefully once she grows a bit, then the covers can be used a few times before they need to be washed.

Have you tried jelly rolling the edges of the prefolds? That might keep the poop to the inside and away from the cover? If you go on youtube there are so many different ways you can fold the prefolds to help with keeping the mess in. =)

I hadn't even thought of looking on YouTube! I haven't been jelly rolling, but I think I'll try that. Thanks for the tip!
